In order for the students and parents to keep in touch with the teachers and with each other please bring an unlocked mobile phone.  A "SIM" card can be purchased at the local telephone store.  (You will need to bring a passport to the store in order to purchase the SIM card.)  Also, this is a very easy way for the parents, who are not at the Festival, to reach their children without going through the hotel.  Hotel Grande Italia has a free Wifi in all of the rooms.  You would need to get your individual pass word from the front desk.  Usually that pass word would work for a week, then you would need to get a new one.

DAILY SCHEDULES & OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION:

Currency Exchange:

Euros can be obtained locally on the island. Bank of America has a ATM machine one block away from the hotel. With Bank of America debt card, there is no charge for withdrawing Euros.

Local Transportation:

Going to Venice is very easy.  There is a bus stop right around the corner from the school.  It leaves for Venice every hour.  You can buy a bus tickets at practically any Tabaco store.  Another way to go to Venice is by water ferry.  It’s less frequent but right next to the hotel. There is also a bus stop in the center of town that would take you to a neighboring island of Sottomarina, where there is a beach.

The School:

All the lessons and piano practice is held at a local elementary school.  There are big classrooms, though there is no air conditioning.  It is a good idea not to open the metal shades or open the windows, this way the rooms stay cooler, and also the mosquitos and flies do not get into the rooms, as there are no window screens anywhere.  Bring a spray bottle to cool yourself down if needed. We have 3 electric fans, which are in the teacher’s studios and in one of the practice rooms, which we also rent. Walking to school from the hotel is about 15 minutes.

Daily Schedules and Other Activities:

This is a schedule of a typical day for students:

In the morning, the students eat breakfast at the hotel and then they go to the school (around 9:30 or 10:00 am) to practice their instrument.  Siesta time is daily from 1:00 – 3:00 pm, at that time the students must return to the hotel to eat their lunch, which will be set up for them in the common suite and also to have a small break.

At the end of Siesta (about 2:45) the students will return to the school for more practice.

A daily schedule will be handed out, usually the night before, which will include their practice time, their solo piano lesson, theory lesson, or rehearsal with the orchestra, as well as concerts, and dinnertime.

In the evening (usually 7:30 pm) the students will eat dinner together at the designated restaurant. Once the festival officially starts, there are student concerts almost every night, which start at 9:15.  Those students who are ready to perform their solo repertoire will be scheduled to perform at these concerts.

Other activities:

After 10 days of intensive studies, performances, rehearsal and competitions, the students will be able to take some trips to Venice and the surround islands.  15-20 minutes away from school, there is a wonderful beach.  Water is very shallow and warm.

Information for Parents accompanying their children on the trip:

Parents can escort the students to and from the school daily in the morning and in the afternoon. They can also purchase groceries and water from the local stores and set up the lunch for the students in the common suite at the hotel.  The shopping for lunch needs to be done before 1:00 pm, since most stores are closed between 1:00 - 4:00 pm daily. In order to secure good practice time for the students, one of the parents usually takes the responsibility of signing out practice rooms for the next day at the Festival’s office.  This sign out schedule usually becomes available at 4:00 pm.

Parents can also take daily trips to Venice, Verona, the Three Island Tour, as well as other local places.
